Interview: The Stiffys
There are few acts as interesting and diverse as Melbourne’s The Stiffys. Comprising Jason Leigh (bass) and Adam Stagg (drums), The Stiffys are an eccentric garage rock act with a kick ass live show and wicked sense of humour. Here we find Jason giving us an insight into their influences, love of Ace Of Base and who they’d love to collaborate with.
How did you guys get together and decide to make music?
We started out as a boy band our manager found us at the skate park and thought we looked like really groovy boys so we became a boy band so we could make all this money in the music industry and also meet girls not that we need help with that hahaha girls always talk to us all the time there’s no doubt there
Tell us in your own words what you sound is like.
It sounds like a couple of groovy dudes having a really really really nice time we’re basically the new airbourne except there’s just two of us and we dress up like sailors and play pretty heavy drums and bass and do all of the sexy dancing and drink a lot of champagne before during and after playing
What are some of the things that have influenced your sound?
I’d say champagne mostly and sometimes pinot grigio when the shops run out of champagne also not having enough money for equipment gave us our sound because i had to play bass through broken guitar amps and Adam only recently got cymbals he used to just have pots and tambourines
What are you currently working on?
Mainly our jumping-it’s really important to keep your game straight when it comes to jumping because it’s the foundation of lots of important things such as stage jumping jumping on trampolines rollerblade jumps barrel rolls talking to girls things like that also jumping is one of the four elements of hip hop
Do you have a procedure for writing music or does it just evolve from jamming?
It usually starts out as jamming but then we have a couple of drinks and get really excited and just start running around and yelling and knocking stuff over and doing pushups and then having naps you know things of that nature our songs are basically whatever we find recorded on our phones the next day
What musician would you love to collaborate with and why?
Probably Airbourne I feel we’re on the same page and would really get each other we both have lots of energy and like to dress up a little bit
What are you listening to right now?
We’re just listening to cool guy stuff, mostly Ace Of Base, The Stiffys, Jay Z, Kanye West, Udays Tiger, The Beards, Bitch Prefect Snowdroppers, Mightiest Of Guns, Tyler The Creator, Gay Paris, Queens Of The Stone Age And So Fresh 2009
You are currently on tour. How is it going and what can people expect from the remaining shows?
We’re getting really good at playing our songs now and also really good at having a couple of drinks we can really put it away now you guys gee whizz let me tell you hahaha people are getting really good at boogie boarding now and not dropping each other anymore and heaps of people are getting into the sexy dancing and then actually doing kisses on each other afterward it’s the best because we used to be worried that the girls would just want to kiss the stiffys after shows and not talk to any other guys but honestly that hasn’t been an issue at all
Any interesting stories, crazy tour happenings or embarrassing incidents you can tell us?
No not really apart from a guy nearly dying at our sydney show last weekend when he almost boogie boarded over a fence and down a four meter drop lucky the security guard caught him except he took our boogie board away for a little while i suppose when the surf is big everyone just needs to do what they need to do as long as they keep giving us our champagne we don’t really mind what happens
Where are you playing next?
We’re going on another national tour with David Liebe Hart from Tim and Eric Awesome Show and then preparing for our next national ep tour early next year and starting work on our next record and setting up a fundraiser at the old bar in Fitzroy called let’s all drink all the drinks and have literally the best time together you guys so they make all the money and then we all get to keep playing rock and roll there it’s going to be great we’ll have to keep you in the loop because we haven’t asked our manager our it yet other than that we’ll mainly do slam dunks our manager keeps making all these jokes about us going to rehab hahaha great jokes everybody
