Interview: Mark de Clive-Lowe
Sydney crew Lioness Presents have had a stellar first year rocking warehouse spots with such international luminaries as Funkineven (EGLO | UK), Pablo Valentino (FACES/MCDE | FRA), Raf Daddy (DFA/RINSE FM | UK), Linkwood (FIRECRACKER | UK) & Steve Spacek (Africa Hitech / Space Invadas). Sunday 9th June they are joined by their first returning guest Mark de Clive-Lowe (Tru Thoughts | LA) for the first birthday celebrations.
A devastating live performer, the MdC-L experience is marked by impromptu studio production created on stage from scratch, using drum machines, keyboards, accapella tracks and effects. The end result: live remixes birthed on stage for each and every gig. With bold chops like this, to call him “prolific” is an understatement-UK tastemaster Gilles Peterson described him as “The man behind a million great tunes.” He is the go-to collaborator for some of the finest soul artists of our time including Jill Scott, Dame Shirley Bassey, Leon Ware and has contributed to over 250 original releases, remixes and collaborations with the likes of Kenny Dope (Masters At Work), DJ Spinna, Phil Asher (RESTLESS SOUL), Zed Bias, Bugz In The Attic, 4Hero and many, many more between. Renowned producer Karizma characterised him as “One of the illest dudes I have ever seen live,” and the guys at Montreal Jazz Festival reckon he’s “Herbie Hancock for the new millennium.” So fairly high praise then.
Given Mark’s body of work we thought we’d ask him a few questions about his collaborations over the years and share a small selection of his work. Check the music links at the bottom of the page.
Any favourite collaborations that stand out in your mind and if so, do you have a couple of stories to share about why they stand out as favourites?
They’re all favorites in different ways. One of my first collabs was 4 days with IG Culture in early 1998. I was hanging out with phil asher and he was going on tour overseas so he dropped me to IG’s on the way to the airport. IG and I made 4 amazing tunes over those 4 days – only one has ever been released (Dub Basement – ‘Thrillseeker’). I remember on the 2nd day he told me he’d got his then-girlfriend on the track we’d done on the 1st day and a few years later she emerged to the scene with her own music under a name that everyone came to know really well: Bembe Segue. That was such an inspiring and memorable time.
It’s your second visit to lioness presents and a special occasion for them as it’s their first birthday event. Are you holding any special surprises up your sleeve?
There’s always something special. I just did a brand new joint with Marvin Gaye collaborator and legendary producer leon ware – I think I might have to give that the on the fly remix treatment!
What equipment will you be using at lioness presents for your remix:live show?
The heart of the whole thing is Native Instruments Maschine which I use for all the live on-the-fly programming and production. A couple of kaoss pads for live sampling and effects, Ableton hosting the accapellas, a keyboard and that’s it!
Any new productions or releases of yours we should be keeping an eye out for?
I’m always keeping busy on that tip. At the moment I’m mixing down Sandra St Victor‘s new album that I’ve produced. She was the lead singer of The Family Stand (most known for the common sampled ‘Ghetto Heaven’) and the record sounds amazing. There’s collaborations on Myele Manzanza’s new album One as well as Dexter Story‘s new Ethiopian flavored album, the collaboration with Leon Ware and I’m getting ready to start the first official album based on my clubnite Church.
Any new producers or musicians we should be keeping an eye out for?
I’m digging a lot of new stuff – Lay-Far, Myele Manzanza, this young band from virginia called Butcher Brown… There’s always plenty of good new shit to check out and dig into.
