Q&A: Leisure Bandits
Led by a pair of Kiwi twin brothers, Joeygat and Pukz, Sydney based Soul/Reggae outfit Leisure Bandits have a unique flavour, with echoes of their heritage, underpinned with a modern production aesthetic. Silky vocals, tough beats, booming basslines, and lush keys and guitars, pretty much all the ingredients required, they’re on track to make waves. Pukz took a minute to answer our questions.
Tell us in your own words what your sound is.
I think our sound is based around simple grooves, melodies and most importantly I think Rawness. Genre wise its hard to say, but we have Soul, Funk, and Reggae definitely in there.
Who makes up your band?
The Leisure Bandits are frontman ‘Joeygat’, Rhythm guitarist and Vocalist ‘Pukz’, Backup vocalist DJ, Bass player ‘Hal Strewe’, and Keys player ‘Danny G Felix’ + Drummer and Horns some times.
What were your influences when you first started writing music? And what are your influences now?
My influences before we started The Leisure Bandits were cats like John Legend, Musiq Soul Child, Adam Levine, theres too many to say really but right now I’m listening to cats like Charles Bradley, Kanye West, Frank Ocean and a few more.
What are you working on at the moment?
An album. We’re working out how we want to approach the album, what songs we wanna do, the kind of vibe we want for it, how we want to produce it etc.
Do you have a procedure for writing music?
Not exactly, when I approach a song it depends how I’m feeling at that time and place, I feel the best stuff comes out of a person when they’re in the moment.
If you could collaborate with any musician in the world, who would you collaborate with, and why?
Myself I’d love to do a track with Adam Levine, I just love the simplicity of his voice and how well he tells a story.
What do you think about Sydney’s music scene? And if you could play anywhere, where would you love to perform?
I think the music scene in Sydney is great if you can find the right places. I’d love to go back to N.Z and play, seeing thats where I come from, gotta give love back to your country.
Seen any good bands lately?
Alphamama, she’s a great artist to watch, Blue Candy are an awesome Latino/reggae band from Sydney, Afro Nomad, an African style band, fantastic to watch, I’d advise you to check any of these bands out.
Any interesting stories?
