If ever there was a local act beats act that didn’t need introduction, it would be these guys. But I’ll do it anyway. Four albums deep into an illustrious career, which has seen them win awards, spawn hit singles, and perform alongside luminaries such as DJ Krush and DJ Kentaro (for his album launch no less!), during their Japanese adventures, Aceyalone and Abstract Rude on their US tour, and much, much more. Yup, these dudes are pretty much the undisputed champions of beats music locally, and more than likely internationally, should their latest masterpiece, HyperParadise, garner the respect it so thoroughly deserves. The keyboard half of the group took a minute to answer the tough questions. Take it away Monsieur Dubs…
Tell us in your own words what your sound is.
Jagged synth-driven psy-pop crossed with demented R&B.
Who makes up your band?
El Gusto and Luke Dubs are at the Hermit helm
What were your influences when you first started writing music? And what are your influences now?
We listen to as much diverse music as possible because there’s something to be gained from all of it. I won’t rattle off a million genres because hiding away in every one of them is some gold!
Rehearsing for the HyperParadise tour is taking up all our time right now. We tryin to figure out how to play this record live. We got some tasty treats for the live show!
Do you have a procedure for writing music?
It changes all the time. You can’t come it at the same way each time because it gets stale real quick. You have to push yourself whether it be your approach, the equipment your using, the way you gather or make your sounds…That way you keep it fresh each time you write.
If you could collaborate with any musician in the world, Who would you collaborate with?
At the moment….Frank Ocean.
What do you think about Sydney’s music scene? And if you could play anywhere, where would you love to perform?
Sydney’s got a great scene. Heaps of different styles of music on different levels from underground warehouses to big venue bangers. Musicians work hard in this town and it shows at gigs with loyal fans coming to show their support and great performances by the bands to keep everyone coming back for more. If Hermitude could perform anywhere, we would love to perform in Reunion. Mad island vibes down there.
Seen any good bands lately?
I saw The Crusty Suitcase Band last week at Hibernian House. Those guys are killa!
Any interesting stories?
Heaps! Come and see us on the HyperParadise tour and we’ll spin a yarn for ya!
Where are you playing next?
We’re playing in NZ at the Splore Festival next weekend! Our first time to NZ and we’re pretty pumped! Then you can catch us round the country slingin HyperParadise to the masses. We’d love to see you there!
