Q&A: Antonio Rosselli (Master of Ribongia)
A relatively recent import to Australia, from Italy, Antonio has quickly made significant waves in Sydney, particularly within the beats scene, but also within the broader musical community. His collabo with it-girl Laney Lane, IdeaIdea, piqued a lot of peoples interest, and he’s going from strength to strength with his solo project, Master of Ribongia or MoR for short. He took a moment to tell us all about what it is that he does…
Tell us in your own words what your sound is.
boom! bleep bleep bleep, wooooosh, wobble-wobble, clap. then it kind of repeats..
Ok seriously, my sound is or I hope it is, fun, dreamy and romantic.
Who makes up your band?
Me and a bunch of sound machines.
What were your influences when you first started writing music?
When I first started I really liked a lot of left field electronic stuff
I think that I wanna stop noticing whats going on around me and focus on what my guts tell me to play and record. I wanna use certain sound aesthetics that I like and hear but I think that I’ve got something to say of my own and the only way to get it out is to just follow my instinct.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently busy finishing up some remixes but I have a new concept album I wanna start working on.
Do you have a procedure for writing music?
Not really, sometimes I’ll start with bass line, some other times with a drum beat. Could also be a melody idea or a particular sound. I love it when an idea or a sound will inspire another idea/sound and like a chain reaction a tune comes out the other end.
If you could collaborate with any musician in the world, Who would you collaborate with?
What do you think about your local Capital City’s music scene? And if you could play anywhere, where would you love to perform?
I love Sydney hey. I recently got back from a trip back home (Italy) and I realized how lucky we are. Sure maybe we’re not as cultural and forward thinking as Melbourne or some European capitols, but I believe it’s up to the musicians, the artist or any other creative to make it happen in this town. There’s no reason we can’t be a new epicenter of ideas.
Opera House, you gotta think big right?
Any interesting stories?
Plenty but I don’t wanna get in trouble..
Where are you playing next?
Friday 14th of October at the Burning Seed fundraiser or maybe earlier at Tone on the 18th of September.
Check out the IdeaIdea single video…
And here’s a few solid gold tunes from his soundcloud, plenty more up on there…
